Six things you can do to improve your indoor air quality for free

It can be easy to get sucked into buying gadgets and products, so I am including a list of six things you can do to improve your indoor air quality for free! Why not start today?

1. Open your windows for 10-15 minutes a day

One of the best way to improve your indoor air quality is to bring the outdoor air quality inside. Sounds pretty simple, right? By opening up windows and doors for 10-15 minutes a day, you can invite fresh air inside to improve your air quality. Note: if you are suffering from seasonal allergies triggered by outdoor air, wait for those to pass first!

2. Take off your shoes at the door

When we walk around outside, our shoes step on all sorts of toxic things like pesticides, herbicides, moulds, and other things we’d rather not think about or have in our homes. To prevent these things from entering our homes, simply take off your shoes before entering the home. This includes running back inside to get something you forgot. It’s a pain, but so helpful in keeping homes clean. If you have pets, be sure to clean their feet before they come inside. If you need to wear shoes inside, have a dedicated indoor pair of shoes or slippers.

3. Close your toilet lid before you flush

If you have a toilet that uses water to flush, another great way to improve your indoor air quality is by simply closing the toilet lid before you flush. The key word here is before, as this ensures that everything inside the toilet stays inside the toilet. This prevents water droplets containing bacteria from splashing onto your floors and being transported around your home!

4. Get rid of any “air fresheners”

Air fresheners contain fragrances that are full of toxins, so one easy way to improve your indoor air quality is to stop using them. This includes air fresheners that you plug into the wall, ones that you spray into the air, ones inside your car, and even scented candles and incense. When in doubt, toss it out!

5. Keep your home dust free

Dust contains chemicals and mould and has a profound impact on indoor air quality yet it can be tricky to keep homes dust free! Start by limiting the amount of clutter in your home by gifting or donating the things you don’t need and then carefully organize the things you intend to keep to make your home easier to clean. Then ensure that you regularly remove dust from your home by vacuuming floors and wiping down other surfaces with a damp cloth.

6. Get rid of non-essential laundry products

Like “air fresheners”, many laundry products are full of chemicals and synthetic fragrances and most of them are completely unnecessary. Products like fabric softener, dryer sheets, and scent booster beads or liquids are not necessary. I’ll dive further into laundry products in another post but for now, get rid of any laundry products that are not a fragrance free laundry detergent or fragrance free laundry soap. Minimizing laundry product usage improves your air quality at home, but also improves your air quality everywhere else you go because you take your clothes with you!
